Bird Gisborne Pinot Gris 2015

03-Nov-2015
Steve Bird is one of the enduring personalities of the New Zealand wine industry. His track record reads: after graduating from Roseworthy he went to work with John Hancock at Morton Estate before setting up the ‘Thornbury’ label, which has since been sold to the Villa Maria group. Now operating his ‘Steve Bird Winery and Vineyards’ business from his home in Tauranga, his vinous reach within the country is far and wide. Much of the wine he makes for his ‘Bird’ label is sourced from Marlborough fruit, and he works particularly closely with the Johnstons who own the 'Dayvinleigh’ to make his ‘Big Barrel’ Pinot Noir. Here, I review the new 2015 Pinot Gris, made from fruit from the ‘Sun Valley’ vineyard at Patutahi, Gisborne. www.birdwines.com
