Big Bunch and Te Awanga 2015 Pinot Gris, and One Off Chardonnay 2015

10-Mar-2016
The Rod McDonald wine operation is a diverse and near all-encompassing business. Rod has many associations with key people in Hawke’s Bay, and as well his different philosophies and approaches to wine, he has created a wide portfolio of wines, which could be said to offer something to everyone. The ‘Big Bunch’ label, part of the ‘Massive Wines’ brand which Rod runs with artist Dick Frizzell, marks the return of long-time Hawke’s Bay vigneron John Kemble into the wine scene. The ‘Big Bunch’ wines are up-front and fruit-driven. The ‘Te Awanga Estate’ wines are Rod’s expression of the cooler and more natural style of wine, as if grown by the sea. The wines under this label generally come from the 17 ha vineyard at Te Awanga, but can include from further inland, if in the more elegant, aromatic style. Arguably the most interesting are Rod’s ‘One Off’ wines, limited bottlings that are made under serendipitous situations, which allow a bit of winemaking artistry and licence. Here, I review three 2015 whites, under these three labels, each demonstrating their driving philosophies. www.rmwines.co.nz
