Babich 2014 White and 2013 Red Releases

As Babich Wines approaches 100 years of winegrowing, the Babich family will have a host of excellent wine from recent outstanding vintages to celebrate with. The 2013 and now 2014 vintages are showing their quality, and although it is still very early days to make a pronouncement, 2015 may turn out to be another superb growing season. Drawing fruit primarily from estate vineyards, Babich have their new Marlborough winery, commissioned in time for the 2014 vintage to take up to 4,000 tonnes of grapes, and long-established Auckland winery which can handle 800 tonnes of North Island fruit. The Babich dynasty is in control of its own destiny, and appears to be set to head into its second century of wine with great stability. Here, I review selection of 2014 and 2013 wines from their ‘Classics’ regional range through the on-premise ‘Black Label’ bottlings, and ‘Family Estates’ varietals, to the more sophisticated ‘Winemakers’ Reserve’ wines and the flagship ‘Patriarch’ red.
