Auburn Bannockburn Central Otago Riesling 2014

05-Dec-2014
The 2014 Bannockburn Riesling will be the last release from Auburn Wines. Max Marriott, Andrew Burge and Dave Paterson have put things on hold indefinitely, with Max and his family now ensconced in the Willamette Valley, Oregon for the foreseeable future. This draws to a premature close one of the most exciting developments in Central Otago. I’ve been a great follower and fan of Auburn Wines and their sub-region expressive Rieslings. The hand-crafted, limited edition wines highlighted the variety that is deemed to rival Pinot Noir in Central Otago, and they displayed regionality if not terroir. The quality of the wines has been stunning, and I’ve rated the Bendigo bottlings from 2011 and 2012 at 20.0/20 perfect scores, and Auburn Wines was my runner-up to ‘Winery of the Year’ in 2012. The final ‘hurrah’ is this wine I review here. www.auburnwines.co.nz
