Askerne 2015 Sauvignon and Pinot Gris, and 2014 Gewurztraminer and Reserve Chardonnay

Establishing Askerne in 1993, John and Kathryn Loughlin joined John’s father in becoming a Hawke’s Bay winegrower, John junior establishing white wines so as to not conflict with the reds his father made at Chateau Waimarama. The 11 ha of whites were eventually expanded by 9 ha with reds in 2000. Having worked with a number of winemakers over the years, the Loughlins now have the very experienced Ant Mackenzie in the position since 2013. Ant has young star Hayden Penny assisting, and while the wines already show greater focus and finesse, I think we can expect more over the future. Here, I review the 2015 Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris, and 2014 Gewurztraminer and ‘Reserve’ Chardonnay.
