Askerne 2014 Hawke’s Bay Viognier and Chardonnay

23-Jan-2015
John and Kathryn Loughlin have over two decades of winegrowing, establishing their Askerne vineyard on the Te Mata-Mangateretere Road near Havelock North, Hawke’s Bay, in 1993. Their first releases were white wines with the 1996 vintage, adding red varieties in 1998. The wines are robust and characterful in style and have a loyal following. Ant Mackenzie assumed the winemaking responsibilities with the 2013 vintage, and I see the resulting wines showing more fruit focus and a greater degree of finesse. (Click here to see my review of a selection of mainly 2013 wines.) Here, I review the 2014 Viognier and Chardonnay which demonstrate Ant’s increasing familiarity with the Loughlin’s quality fruit. www.askerne.co.nz
