Ashwood 2013 Classic Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Estate Chardonnay

Ashwood Estate is part of the Ashwood Fine Wine and Food Company of the MacPhail family which has been farming for over 20 years and is Gisborne’s largest land user and horticultural supplier. The family’s ‘Leaderbrand’ company is the region’s largest grower of grapes and recently began marketing their single vineyard Ashwood Estate wines, the Pinot Gris made by Nick Nobilo and the Chardonnay by Steve Voysey, who has now assumed full responsibility for the wines. I have reviewed a vertical selection of the Pinot Gris (click here to see), as well as the Ashwood Chardonnays from 2010 (click here for the review) and the 2012 (click here to see). I now review the new 2013 Pinot Gris under the ‘Classic’ range, introduced to enable greater accessibility and approachability to the regional and house style, plus the 2013 ‘Estate’ Chardonnay. 2013 is one of the best vintages Gisborne has experienced in years, so this is an ideal year with which to launch these wines.
