Ashwell Vineyards was established in 1989 when John and Vivienne Phipps purchased land in Dublin Street on the Martinborough Terrace and planted vines. Expanding these plantings in 1991, they now have 4.05 hectares, planted predominantly to Pinot Noir, with smaller amounts of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Phipps and their family, including grandchildren tend the vines, and the wines are made by Paul Mason at Martinborough Vineyard. The wines are regionally expressive, and the Pinot Noir has experienced success with gold at the Air Bew Zealand Wine Awards. Here, I review the new release 2015 Sauvignon Blanc. www.ashwellvineyards.co.nz
