Ash Ridge ‘Estate’’ 2015 Chardonnay, Merlot and Syrah

28-Jun-2016
Purchasing land in 2000, Chris and Sonya Wilcock established their Ash Ridge wine venture to release their first wines in 2008. Their cellar door and winery is on S.H. 50 not far from the Ngatarawa Road junction, and is on their ‘Cardoness’ vineyard which has Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Syrah planted. The Wilcocks also draw from the ‘Peet’ vineyard, with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc planted on a ridge of ash pumice, hence the brand name. Lauren Swift, the young and talented winemaker, has earned a number of accolades as has Ash Ridge, and the wines are well worth following. There are three ranges: the varietal and site expressive ‘Estate’ wines, the ageworthy ‘Premium’ tier, and top of the line ‘’Vintner’s Reserve’ wines. Here I review the new 2015 ‘Estate’ Chardonnay, Merlot and Syrah. Chris reports that 2015 was their best vintage yet. www.ashridgewines.co.nz
