Ash Ridge 2016 Estate, 2015 and 2014 Premium Estate and Vintners Reserve Wines

06-Sep-2016
Chris and Sonya Wilcock operate Ash Ridge Wines from their Hawke’s Bay property at Bridge Pa on S.H. 50 near the Ngatarawa Road junction outside of Hastings. They have their cellar door and winery at the home ‘Cardoness’ vineyard, and also draw fruit from their nearby ‘Peet’ vineyard, as well as sourcing contract fruit from neighbouring growers. The Wilcocks have the young and talented Lauren Swift as their winemaker, and together they have seen the Ash Ridge wines grow in quality and reputation. To better differentiate the styles produced, the Wilcocks have introduced three ranges: the varietal and site expressive ‘Estate’ wines, the ageworthy ‘Premium Estate’ tier, and top of the line ‘’Vintner’s Reserve’ bottlings. In June, I reviewed a selection of smart 2015 vintage ‘Estate’ wines (click here to see my reviews). Here I review wines from all three tiers: a rosé and Sauvignon Blanc as ‘Estate’ releases from the 2016 vintage; under the ‘Premium Estate’ tier a 2015 Malbec and 2014 Syrah, and from the top ‘Vintner’s Reserve’ range a 2015 Chardonnay and 2014 Syrah. www.ashridgewines.co.nz
