Alpha Domus ‘The Navigator’ 2011

06-May-2014
Establishing the Alpha Domus vineyard and winery in the Bridge Pa Triangle district in 1990, the Ham family set out to produce top class Hawke’s Bay wine, with the red Bordeaux varieties as the mainstay. ‘The Aviator’ under the ‘AD’ range is the flagship wine and has a proven track record going back to 1996 (click here to see my review of a vertical tasting from 2009 to 1996). However, ‘The Navigator’ blended red is arguably the benchmark, showing classical elegance and varietal characters which are absolutely down the middle in terms of style. Rather than making a ‘statement wine’, Paul Ham and his winemaker Kate Galloway ensure ‘The Navigator’ offers approachability and value, and its balance gives the wine a surprising degree of longevity. There’s much to be said for this approach. Here, I review the current 2011 release. www.alphadomus.co.nz
