Alpha Domus 2012 Viognier and Syrah

17-Feb-2014
As with most of the earlier winegrowers in Hawke’s Bay, the Rhone varieties of Viognier and Syrah were not part of the equation. The varieties of note then were Chardonnay and the Bordeaux reds Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. These were the mainstays then and still are, but the Rhone varieties have burst into the limelight and are deemed extremely exciting, particularly Syrah. These two grapes were not planted in the original Alpha Domus vineyards in the Bridge Pa Triangle in the early 1990s. They were established in 2007 and the area to Syrah has been increased. Alpha Domus experienced immediate success with the wines, and are now regarded as significant styles, especially so as they perform well in different growing conditions to the traditionally planted grapes. Here, I review the 2012 ‘Wingwalker’ Viognier and ‘Barnstormer’ Syrah. The vintage is considered a challenging one, but the varieties, viticulture and winemaking have shone through extremely well. www.alphadomus.co.nz
