Allan Scott Family Winemakers is truly a Marlborough wine business, founders Allan and Catherine Scott figuring among the pioneers of the region. Their wines are classical representations of variety and regionality, and seen widely in nearly all segments of the market. However, the Scott family have not been shy of being involved with other regions, and the Scott Base Central Otago venture is proof of their commitment to making fine wine elsewhere. To complement the portfolio, Allan Scott has occasionally sourced wine from Hawke’s Bay, through their relationship with good friends there. Here, I review the 2014 Allan Scott Hawke’s Bay Shiraz. No doubt the naming of it as a Shiraz rather than as Syrah refers to its ripeness and generosity from the 2014 vintage. www.allanscott.com

Very dark, deep, black-hued ruby-red colour, near impenetrable at the heart, lighter on the rime with slight purple hues. The nose is softly full with fragrant aromas of dark-red and violet florals harmoniously melded with dark raspberry fruit, notes of blackberries, unfolding plum elements and a little pepper. This has a soft and rounded core. Medium-bodied, the palate has a concentrated core of ripe blackberry fruit with dark raspberry and plum elements entwined with dark iron-earth notes, aromatic florals, unfolding a little black pepper and spice. The flavours show plenty of presence and the fruit is supported by supple tannins providing plenty of structure with soft acidity. Spice, pepper and floral notes carry to a rounded, but concentrated, lingering finish. This is a rounded, but concentrated Syrah with ripe blackberry, raspberry, iron-earth, floral and pepper flavours on a supple, but substantial palate. Match wirh lamb, beef and venison dishes over the next 5 years. Syrah fruit from Gimblett Road, fermented to 13.0% alc., the wine aged 14 months in approx. 25% new oak. 40 cases made. 18.0/20 May 2018 RRP $75.00 Cellar Door Only
