Alexander and Dusty Road 2015 Martinborough Pinot Noirs

27-May-2016
Specialising in Pinot Noir but also making small quantities of Merlot, Michael Finucane and Roz Walker have been drawing fruit from their 5 ha vineyard on Hinakura Road in Martinborough for 15 years. With their new winery commissioned in time for the 2014 vintage, it appears there has been a step up in consistency of quality. I’ve rated both their second label ‘Dusty Road’ and their flagship ‘Alexander’ Pinot Noirs from 2014 at 5-stars; but also point out that earlier vintages have been well-reviewed too. With 2015, Michael reckons the wines could be their best yet. He tells me with the 2016 ferments they have been experimenting with increased inputs of indigenous yeast, whole cluster and new oak, with one tank containing 100% wild yeast, 100% whole bunch and almost 100% new oak! Clearly the accumulated years of experience and the use of their new winery is encouraging them to lift the quality even further. Here, I review the 2015 Pinot Noirs, the ‘Dusty Road’ coming available now, and the Alexander being held back a little while longer.
