Alana ‘Estate’ Martinborough Pinot Noir 2015

07-Mar-2017
The ‘Alana’ brand of Martinborough has been continued by Mike Cornish and his family under the ‘Wairarapa Vintners’ company. With a new winery and now a cellar door on Kitchener Street, on part of the old ‘Jackson’ Riesling block from which fruit is harvested. The company also purchases fruit from around the district, but has begun to lease vineyards on the Martinborough Terrace to have greater control of the fruit quality. These include the old ‘Porters’ olive block, the ‘Phillips’ block on Kitchener Street and from the ‘Vynfields’ vineyard. John Jones is the vineyard manger, with Alex Craighead and Alistair Gardner making the wines. Alex will be concentrating more on his Nelson project, so Alistair, who has the ‘Grava’ label will be assuming the greater winemaking responsibilities at Alana Wines. Here, I review the Alana ‘Estate’ Pinot Noir 2015. www.alana.co.nz
