Alana Estate 2014 Whites, and 2013 Chardonnay and Pinot Noirs

03-Nov-2014
Following a transitional period following the announcement that Murdoch James had purchased the Alana Estate, the future of the Alana Estate brand has become clearer. Mike Cornish, one of the Alana owners has bought the brand and stock, under a new company named ‘Wairarapa Vintners’, and winemaker Alex Craighead tells me there will be a new winery on a site in Kitchener Street by the end of the year. This is good news for followers of Alana Estate, who have enjoyed the wines which have displayed classic Martinborough character, made by seriously-minded and adventurous winemakers. Here, I review the 2014 Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling, the 2013 Chardonnay, and a trio of 2013 Pinot Noirs from the fruit-focussed ‘Rapture’ to the premium ‘Estate’ and sophisticated ‘Limited Release’ tiers, all made by Alex Craighead. www.alana.co.nz
