Alana Estate 2013 Whites, and 2012 Chardonnay and Pinot Noir

Alana Estate has a significant presence in Martinborough and is a popular venue for concerts, with a successful restaurant operation. The heart of Alana Estate is its 20.4 ha vineyard in the middle of the highly desirable Martinborough Terrace area, and a gravity-flow winery. Established in 1993, the company has experienced a turbulent ownership and management history, but the terroir and quality of the vineyard has come through with a number of top-flight wines over the years. The arrival of experienced viticulturist Pete Wilkins as CEO in the middle of 2011 and winemaker Alex Craighead at the start of 2012 promises much in stability and the momentum to make progress. I visited Alana in January and felt a consolidated purpose, and pride especially in the wines that Pete and Alex had been fully responsible for (click here to read my report). The marketing activity has gone up a gear with full-page advertising and wine offers recently. I’ve just received a selection of wines from the 2013 and 2012 vintages. They show the team at Alana are putting considerable effort into the wines. Here are my reviews.
