Established by the Skeggs family in 1995, Akarua has grown from the original 48 ha Cairnmuir Road vineyard to encompass a 21 ha vineyard on Felton Road and a 14 ha vineyard in Lowburn. The focus at Akarua is Pinot Noir and with around two decades of production, Akarua is recognised for its top flight examples. The ‘estate’ Akarua label has seen considerable success in shows and judgings, testifying to the quality of the fruit and the sites from which the grapes are sourced. The value ‘Rua’ Pinot Noir, which incorporates contracted fruit is deemed a quality wine, and also performs well. The super-premium ‘The Siren’ Pinot Noir showcases elegance and is very highly regarded. The winemaking is in the care of Andrew Keenlyside, with the company since 2009, and the vineyard manager is the very experienced Mark Naismith. Here, I review the new 2016 Rua Pinot Noir and 2015 Akarua Pinot Noir. www.akarua.com
