Abel ‘Single Vineyard’ Nelson Pinot Noir 2015

01-Apr-2016
The Abel clone, also known as the Ata Rangi or ‘gumboot’ clone has a special place in Pinot Noir production in New Zealand. It purportedly originates from the famed Romanee-Conti vineyard. The grapes of this clone can yield some of the most interesting and complex flavours, and deliver considerable structure in the resulting wines. It doesn’t perform equally well in different regions and different sites, but it has such a point of difference to the modern clones that amounts of it are used with confidence in blends. Here, I review a single estate wine made solely from the Abel clone, from the Redwood Valley district of Nelson, vinified by the team at Kahurangi Estate. The fruit was deemed a cut above some of the other cuvees that it warranted being bottled under a new label. www.kahurangiwine.com
