Abbey Cellars 2014 Rosé and 2013 Reds

The Haworth family established their 13 ha vineyard, winery and cellar door complex in the Bridge Pa Triangle district of Hawke’s Bay in 2002. They grow 10 varieties and make only estate-grown wine, with the classical Hawke’s Bay Bordeaux-varietal expressions as their mainstays. The wines are made by Amelia Riwai, and are fulsome, fruity and very consumer friendly. The recent releases have impressed with their varietal expression and the wines are showing a greater predisposition towards elegance, no doubt a combination of the winemaking fine-tuning and increasing age of the wines. Here, I review the 2014 ‘Passion’ Rosé, 2013 ‘Bishop’ and ‘Prophet’ Merlot and Cabernet-based wines, and the 2013 ‘Eden’ Syrah, the wines from excellent vintages.
