Abbey Cellars 2013 Passion, and 2012 Eden and Mary

02-Dec-2013
Abbey Cellars is the winegrowing passion and business of Jan and Warren Haworth who established their 13 ha single vineyard and winery estate in the Bridge Pa Triangle district of Hawke’s Bay in 2002. The name was inspired by their love of churches, cathedrals and abbeys, and the winery building is an interpretation of a gothic abbey. The wines are made solely from estate fruit, the flagships being the Merlot and Cabernet-based Bordeaux-styled wines, but wines from Riesling, Chardonnay, Syrah, Malbec and Cabernet Franc are made along with smaller volumes of other varietals. Winemaker is Amelia Riwai. Here I review the 2013 ‘Passion’ Rosé, 2012 ‘Eden’ Syrah and 2012 ‘Mary’ Late Harvest Riesling. The wines show a greater degree of richness and concentration and are bold Hawke’s Bay expressions. www.abbeycellars.com
