The trophy winners of the 2014 Spiegelau International Wine Competition were announced at an awards dinner in Auckland last night. The Champion Wine of the Show was won by Elephant Hill Hawke’s Bay Syrah 2013. This is a fabulous result for Elephant Hill who has enjoyed considerable success for their wines in recent years, and recognition for their work with the Syrah variety, and fruit from their different vineyard sources.
The award for Champion Producer of the Show went to Saint Clair Family Estate who took 5 gold medals, 6 silver and 16 bronzes, with 90% of the wines they entered receiving an award. This year, competition directors Belinda Jackson and Margaret Cresswell introduced an award for ‘Portfolio Excellence’, designed to recognise independent third-party companies who distribute a range of wines. The inaugural award went to EuroVintage, whose wines won 10 golds and two trophies with wines from Chile, Portugal, Australia and New Zealand.
The Spiegelau International Wine Competition is growing from strength to strength with an increasing number of entries every year. For 2014, there were 1320 wines judged, with the result of 85 gold medals, 199 silvers and 536 bronzes awarded. To see the gold medal winners and my analysis, click here.
