Nelson Wineart First XV Wine Competition 2011 Results Announced

The results of the 2011 Nelson Wineart ‘First XV’ Wine Competition have been announced with New Zealand the winner over Italy and the U.S.A. This event organised by Nelson Wineart pitched 15 Riesling, Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminers, 5 of each variety from New Zealand (all being Nelson, of course!), the United States of America and Italy against each other to come up with the top 15 wines from a pool of 45. The competition was conducted in the spirit of and in support of the Rugby World Cup game between the U.S. and Italy being held in Nelson, and was designed to showcase the aromatic varieties proven to be successful for the Nelson region.

The panel of Sam Kim (N.Z.), Leslie SBrocco (U.S.A.), Riccardo Castaldi (Italy), chaired by Ralph Kyte-Powell (Australia), judged the 45 wines blind, each judge selecting their 15 favourite wines. Here are the top five wines of each varietal category:
The Top Rieslings:
1. Blackenbrook Vineyard Nelson 2009 – Nelson
2. Greenhough Vineyard Apple Valley 2010 – Nelson
3. Woollaston Estates Nelson 2009 – Nelson
4. Neudorf Vineyards Moutere 2010 – Nelson
5. Cantina Produttori Valle Isarco Aristos 2010 – Italy
The Top Pinot Gris:
1. Etude Carneros 2010 – USA
2. Te Mania Nelson 2010 – Nelson
3. Plonzer Friuili Grave 2010 – Italy
4. Neudorf Vineyards Moutere 2010 – Nelson
5. Chehalem Reserve Willamette Valley 2008 – USA
The Top Gewurztraminers:
1. Cantina Tramin Alto Adige Nussbaumer 2009 – Italy
2. J. Hoffstatter Kolbenhof Alto Adige 2010 – Italy
3. St Michael-Eppan Alto Adige Sanct Valentin 2010 – Italy
4. Cantina Produttori Cortaccia Alto Adige Brenntal 2009 – Italy
5. Seifried Estate Winemaker’s Collection Nelson 2010 – Nelson
With the final tallies from these 15 wines, there were 7 Nelson, N.Z. wines, 6 Italian and 2 American wines, making Nelson, N.Z. the winner of the 2011 Nelson Wineart First XV Wine Competition. It is envisaged that this will become a regular event.
