The results of the inaugural New Zealand Riesling Challenge 2010 were announced at the ‘In Praise of Riesling’ event held on 31 January. All of the 12 wines were judged blind, with the assessments made by all 12 winemakers led by Bob Campbell MW. In the tally up of scores, the points awarded by winemakers to their own wine were excluded.
Matt Donaldson of Pegasus Bay took first place with his Riesling made in a medium-sweet style at 10.0% alc. Matt employed freezing the bunches to increase the brix level before fermentation. In second place was Matt Dicey of Mt Difficulty and Mike Brown of Golden Hills took third spot.
It will be very interesting to see how the wines look with further bottle-age.
