The trophy results for the 2015 Marlborough Wine how were announced at a celebratory dinner last night. The Champion Wine of the Show was the Villa Maria ‘Reserve’ Marlborough Pinot Noir 2013. Listed below are the trophy results and the gold medal winning wines.
The Marlborough Wine Show is one of the new breed of regional or style focussed wine judging competitions. These shows are usually smaller and less demanding on judges’ palates, and are tailored to appreciate the unique attributes of the region or style. The Marlborough Wine Show 2015 was the fifth time this competition has been conducted and showcases sub-region and style diversity, especially with Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. Run by Belinda Jackson and Marg Cresswell, the show has introduced a number of innovations which could be adopted by others.
Of 508 wines judged, there were 44 (8.66%) gold medals, 121 (23.82%) silver and 231 (45.47%) bronzes awarded. Sauvignon Blanc was the most successful variety with 18 golds from 171 wines judged, 8 of the golds being multi-subregional blends from the 2015 vintage. There were 10 Pinot Noir golds from 109 wines, 4 of these from the Southern Valleys in the 2014 vintage. Riesling performed well with 4 golds from 31 wines judged.
The Marlborough Wine Show was judged in Blenheim over 6 and 7 October. The chief judge was Oliver Masters, and the overseas guest judges were Ralph Kyte-Powell of Melbourne and Wilfred Wong of San Francisco. For a full list of medal winners, go to www.marlboroughwineshow.co.nz
