Villa Maria’s ‘Single Vineyard – Seddon’ Pinot Noir 2012 was named Champion Wine of the Show at the awards dinner for the 2014 Marlborough Wine Show in Blenheim on Saturday night. The show is one of a new breed of regional wine judging competitions which focusses of the distinctiveness of the region, allowing a stronger examination of the factors that are responsible for the quality and styles of the wines. This year’s judging was conducted at the start of October (click here to see my report on the gold medal results).
Villa Maria dominated taking 6 of the 17 major awards, with Pernod-Ricard and Giesen each taking 3, and Lawson’s Dry Hills with 2. The Marlborough Museum Legacy Award went to Coopers Creek for their 2005, 2009 and 2013 Rieslings. At the dinner, Wine Marlborough announced Ivan Sutherland as the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ recipient. www.marlboroughwineshow.co.nz
