Judged the last week of September, the results of the 2010 Hawke’s Bay A&P Mercedes-Benz Wine Awards were announced at the awards dinner last night. The show is a significant one, highlighting the quality wines of the Hawke’s Bay region only. The Champion Wine of the Show went to Church Road Syrah 2009, confirming the status of this emergent star red wine variety as a proven success in New Zealand, especially when grown in Hawke’s Bay. The Reserve Champion Wine of the Show went to Esk Valley ‘Winemakers Reserve’ Chardonnay 2008, the Chardonnay variety one of the region’s mainstays.
It was a showcase for Church Road, being named Winery of the Year at the show, and taking trophies for Merlot, Pinot Gris and Sweet Wine, and seven gold medals in total. This follows the Church Road Reserve Chardonnay 2008 winning Champion Wine of the Show at the 2010 N.Z. International Wine Show just recently. Chris Scott and his team have done remarkably well.
