Gimblett Gravels 2013 Annual Vintage Selection

By May 26, 2015No Comments

The Gimblett Gravels Winegrowers Association has announced the 2013 Annual Selection. This is the sixth release of the top dozen red wines from the Gimblett Gravels delimited region as selected by Andrew Caillard MW of Sydney in a blind tasting. Andrew Caillard has made every selection from the inaugural 2008 selection, and the Association values the continued perspective of an independent judge with an international perspective.

The 2013 selection was made from samples submitted by a record 46 Association members. With 2013 being seen as one of the best-ever vintages in the region, the selection is regarded as a very strong one. Caillard noted the wines having “all the hallmarks of a classic vintage, with lovely aromatic complexity, generous flavours, supple textures and mineral length”. Gordon Russell, chairman of the Gimblett Gravels Winegrowers Association reckoned “the 12 chosen wines are…amongst the greatest red wines yet produced in New Zealand”, showcasing the producers’ skills and the special terroir of the Gimblett Gravels.

It is fascinating to compare the number of Bordeaux-styled and Blended Reds to that of the Syrahs each year, as they indicate the relative strengths of each category in that vintage (as seen by Andrew Caillard MW):

2008: 5 Bordeaux/Blended Reds, 7 Syrah
2009: 8 Bordeaux/Blended Reds, 4 Syrah
2010: 9 Bordeaux/Blended Reds, 3 Syrah
2011: 8 Bordeaux/Blended Reds, 4 Syrah
2012: 5 Bordeaux/Bended Reds, 7 Syrah
2013: 7 Bordeaux/Blended Reds, 5 Syrah
