Gimblett Gravels 2011 Annual Vintage Selection Announced

By September 5, 2013No Comments
The fourth Gimblett Gravels Annual Vintage Selection has just been released. This is a dozen wines in the Bordeaux Blends and Syrah categories chosen to represent the best of the vintage from the Gimblett Gavels district. The Gimblett Gravels Winegrowers Association has engaged the highly respected Andrew Caillard MW of Sydney as the independent selector from the inaugural dozen wines from the 2008 vintage. The wines are sent to key wine media and influencers around the world for their appreciation.

This initiative is to be applauded as the wines show the strengths of the 800 ha area in each vintage, as assessed by an independent and internationally recognised wine authority. Each year, the mix of wines is different, sometimes showcasing the Bordeaux Blends, and others the Syrah wines. The 2011 vintage was “a warm season with good heat accumulation” noted Tony Bish, the Chairman of the Gimblett Gravels Winegrowers Association.

For 2011, Caillard’s summary was that the selected wines “were coherent and showed strong regional definition”. The Merlots showed good depth and balance, the Cabernets had fragrant violet aromas and “al dente tannins” and the Syrahs were wines of “vinosity and freshness”. I’ve enjoyed seeing Caillard’s picks in the past and find that I am very much in agreement with his choices.  www.gimblettgravels.com
