Larry McKenna of the Escarpment Vineyard and his distributor Vintners N.Z. are offering a unique ‘boot camp’ experience to a hospitality sector professional to increase the level of expertise in this country. They are inviting submissions from sommeliers, maitre d’s and chefs to participate in the 2015 vintage at Escarpment Vineyard. The successful applicant will spend 7-10 days in April 2015 experiencing and contributing to all aspects of the harvest, vintage and winemaking. This includes travel, accommodation, meals and tastings that are all part and parcel of working vintage. There is also a follow-up to vintage with the participant coming back for blending later in the year, near the end of November.
The benefits of such intimate participation are clear, with the attendee gaining rare insights to the making of fine wine, with one of the country’s highly respected winemakers, and experiencing the direct inputs into the resulting wine. The winner of last year’s competition was Jared Svedlund, from the French Café in Auckland. You can read about Jared’s experience on The French Café blog by clicking here. Jared, Simon and Creghan from the French Café will be creating their own Pinot Noir blend at The Escarpment Vineyard as an exclusive for The French Café as a direct result of the competition.
