Consumer Magazine’s White & Rosé Tasting

‘Summer in a Glass’ is the title for the article with the results of Consumer magazine’s tasting of white and rosé wines. Issue #531, for December 2012/January 2013 has just arrived and the findings are perfectly timed for providing advice to wine consumers on what to enjoy over the warm summer months. Consumer collected 60 New Zealand wines, all under $30.00: Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Chardonnay and rosé wines from Wellington supermarkets and bottle stores and served them blind to a judging panel of Sue Davies, Laura Saba, Huw Kinch and Gary Bowering, led by Larry McKenna, director and winemaker for Escarpment Vineyard in Martinborough.

11 Five-Star Wines
A very high proportion of the wines were judged well by the panel.  11 wines were rated 5-star. The Selaks ‘Reserve’ 2012, 900 Grapes 2012 and The Ned 2012 Sauvignon Blancs, all from Marlborough, the Stoneleigh Pinot Gris 2011, the Hunters 2010, Pallider Estate 2011 and Montana 2011 Rieslings and Saint Clair ‘Premium’ Chardonnay 2011 were in this top group. The three rosé wines also earning gold medal equivalent were Jules Taylor, Sileni Cabernet Franc Rosé and Villa Maria ‘Private Bin’, all from the 2012 vintage.

The article discusses briefly the criteria for each of the styles. Consumer magazine also lists 18 wines ‘Worth Considering’ which are regarded as silver medal equivalents, and on the website www.consumer.org.nz the 3-star wines (you must join Consumer to access the full content). These are also well-worth looking at to know as we head into the holiday season, and access to your normal wine store or your cellar is not possible!

Although wine and alcoholic beverages are not the focus of the Consumer magazine, the staff approach the category in the same fashion as they assess other consumer items. Consumer believe the articles on wine offer a balance to the content, and say there is considerable interest in and good feedback from them, as they offer common sense and good recommendations on a subject that is easily misunderstood by the general consumer. The article on white wines are rosé includes advice on using quality glassware, an issue that is becoming realised as important in the enjoyment of wine by a growing number of people. This issue also reports on the findings of a tasting of Sparkling wines by the Australian consumer organisation ‘Choice’ and has a snippet on Pinot Noir from ‘Consumer Reports’ in the U.S.

Don’t worry, Consumer is providing plenty of its regular fare with features on sunscreens, UPF clothing and spray tans which are appropriate for the summer months.
