The devastating earthquake of Tuesday 22 February will have long-lasting repercussions for residents of Christchurch and the rest of New Zealand. My good friends Rex Ormandy and David Graham in Christchurch, who I have had a liquor retailing relationship back to Wilson Neill days in the 1970s, count themselves fortunate to have escaped without injury to themselves, their family and co-workers.
Rex Ormandy of Vino Fino, at 188 Durham Street, in the heart of the city has not been able to open since the earthquake. He and Judy are still waiting for an assessment by engineers, and this may take some time yet. The Ormandys and the staff have not even been able to get in to clean up yet. David Graham of Decant at 61 Mandeville Street in Riccarton has been luckier. The shop was not affected to the extent necessary to close the doors, and he and Juliet have been able to trade relatively normally. Brian de Lore at Hemmingways in Radio N.Z. House in the CBD is safe, but the premises suffered extensive damage.
