Canterbury Wine Awards 2016

By April 26, 2016No Comments

The fifth Canterbury Wine Awards were judged on 18 April in Christchurch with 84 entries yielding 9 (10.71%) gold medals, 18 (21.43% silver and 35 (41.67%) bronzes,, this giving 62 (73.8%) of the wines entered a medal award.

The awards are open to all wines grown in the Canterbury region, from the Waitaki River to the south up to the Conway River in the north. This year, 52% of the enties came from the Waipara Valley, 19% from Banks Peninsula, 13% from North Canterbury (excluding Waipara), 12% from the Canterbury Plains and 4% from South Canterbury. Aromatic wines – Riesling, Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer made up 45% of the entries, the largest and most successful class being Riesling.

The judging is conducted over two stages, firstly the wines judged on their own to determine their medal status, then secondly with reference to eight food classes, these being Vegetarian, Pork, Seafood, Cheese, Game, Lamb, Spicy Food and Chicken. The trophies are awarded to the most food-friendly match in each class. The Champion Wine of the Show will be chosen from one of these, and will be announced at the David Jackson Dinner on Wednesday 18 May. (I have added the Champion Wine of the Show to this article now.

The judges were Jo Burzynska, Jonny Schwass and Kirsten Creasy. I list the trophy winners and medal winners following. www.winesofcanterbury.co.nz
