Air New Zealand Wine Awards 2012 – Trophy Winners

By November 25, 2012No Comments

The trophy winners of the 2012 Air New Zealand Wine Awards were announced at the black-tie awards dinner last night in Wellington’s TSB Arena. The trophy for ‘Champion Wine of the Show’ was awarded to Grasshopper Rock Earnscleugh Vineyard Central Otago Pinot Noir 2010. This was a popular award with much talk and speculation beforehand that this wine from the Alexandra district might be the supreme wine, with many critics and commentators putting this wine as their choice. It will be a memorable occasion for Phil Handford, his fellow partners in the business, and for winemaker Peter Bartle of VinPro.

The trophy for ‘Reserve Wine of the Show’ went to Matua Valley ‘Single Vineyard’ Marborough Chardonnay 2011, which was a little surprise, due to the dominance of the Villa Maria group in this category, with 5 Villa Maria and 2 Vidal gold medal wines of the 15 awarded. The Matua wine too, was a popular success for one of the larger and most significant players in the New Zealand wine industry.

Medal Standards, Elite Gold Medal and Pure Wines
The scoring scale used at the Air New Zealand Wine Awards incorporate different criteria to other shows using the 20 point scale. A bronze medal wine must achieve an average of at least 16.0 out of 20 points, compared to the 15.5/20 for other shows. This has raised the bar, to ensure that any medal awarded wine is seen as one of definite quality. The Air N.Z. Wine Awards also recognises the top gold medal wines, which score at least 19.0 points out of 20. To reach gold medal status, the wines must average 18.5. The top gold tier wines are ‘Elite Gold Medal’ winners. This is extra recognition for the very best wines in an industry which is seeing an increasing number of excellent and very high quality wines which are attaining gold medal standard. Another important distinction is that of ‘Pure’ medal awards, where wines meeting accredited sustainability criteria are recognised. So a ‘Pure Elite Gold’ has everything going for it!
