Vinoptima ‘Reserve’ Ormond Gewurztraminer 2008

Gewurztraminer from New Zealand – Gisborne
Review Date - 26-Jul-2013

18.5/20

Full, bright, light golden yellow with good depth, lighter on edge. This has a full and densely concentrated bouquet with real breadth of ripe yellow stonefruits, Turkish Delight and ginger, revealing complex and detailed layers of musk, herbs and earth and nuances of flinty reduction. The nose is one of richness and decadence. Medium in sweetness, the palate is one of real weight and mouthfilling presence, with textures that are soft and a mouthfeel that is creamy and near-unctuous. The fruit expression has restraint, ensuring a sense of stylishness, with subtle acidity in the background. Honey, musk, Turkish Delight and spices are interwoven, forming a harmonious amalgam, and the palate flows smoothly, growing in lusciousness and power, leading to a dense, richly textured finish with slightly subdued fruit flavours. This is a softly-textured, near-unctuous medium Gewurztraminer with stylish exoticism and real weight and depth. Serve with pate, rich pork dishes, Asian cuisine or cheeses over the next 5-6+ years. Hand-picked fruit destemmed and given 12-18 hours skin contact and fermented in stainless steel and German oak ovals to 14.0% alc. and 18 g/L rs, the wine aged in tank and wood for 10 months. The 2008 vintage has produced an "elegant rose” according to Nick Nobilo. 18.5/20 Jul 2013 RRP $105.00

Full, light golden-hued straw yellow colour. The bouquet is full, fat a decadent with ripe apricot, mandarin zest, honey and musk aromas merging with Turkish Delight, flinty minerals and nuts. Some reduction is present. Medium-dry to taste, this is broad and rich with a combination of opulence and savoury complexities that unfold in layers. Citrus fruits, musk and ginger are complexed by honey, nuts and earthy, flinty reductive elements. The mouthfeel is oily through mid-palate and some phenolic coarseness and alcohol appear, carrying through to a rich, soft finish with honey, nuts and musk. This is an opulent and complex flavoured Gewurztraminer that will keep another 5-6 years. Fruit from the ‘Vinoptima’ estate fermented in large oak to 14.0% alc. and 18 g/L rs. 18.0-/20 Jun 2013 RRP $101.95
