Spade Oak ‘Voysey' Gisborne Syrah 2012

Syrah from New Zealand – Gisborne
Review Date - 02-Apr-2014

17.5/20

A blend 90% Syrah and 10% Viognier from the Patutahi district, fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine given limited oak contact. The second bottling with 13.5% alc. whereas the first bottling is 13.0%. Full, dark hearted ruby-red colour. The nose is elegantly presented with intense aromatics of well-concentrated dark red berry fruits infused with white and black pepper, revealing excellent Viognier florality and lifted perfumes. Medium to medium-bodied, this has an up-front, deep and softly rounded core of raspberry and black berry fruits, along with pepper and florals. The fruit is supported by a supple and positively textured structure with a supple mouthfeel, the grip enhanced by fresh acidity that lifts the aromatics. The fine, grainy line carries the flavours to an aromatic, soft finish. This is an up-front, red-fruited Syrah with pepper and Viognier lift, and a positively structured mouthfeel. Match with barbecued meats and casserole dishes over the next 4+ years. 17.5/20 Apr 2014 RRP $20.95

Dark purple-hued ruby-red colour with youthful purple hues on edge. Full, voluminous and bold aromas of black berry fruits, raspberries, boysenberries and pepper are lifted by violetty florals and exotic perfumes. Some savoury, minerally notes add interest. Light-medium bodied, juicy dark raspberry, black fruits pepper and boysenberry fruit flavours form a soft- textured line, along with light, supple tannins. Fresh acidity adds to the mouthwatering succulence and liveliness of the fruit which leads to a moderately sustained, fruit-forward finish. This is a fresh, easy-drinking, juicy Syrah with perfumes, supple tannins and light body. Match with pizza, pasta, risotto and barbecued food over the next 3+ years. A blend 90% Syrah and 10% Viognier from the Patutahi district, fermented to 13.0% alc., the wine given limited oak contact. 17.0-/20 Feb 2013 RRP $20.95
