Spade Oak ‘Reserve' Gisborne Chardonnay 2009

Chardonnay from New Zealand – Gisborne
Review Date - 14-Feb-2011

18.5-/20

Chardonnay is a passion for the Voyseys, with Steve well-respected as a top maker of it and Eileen a respected grower. They see Gisborne as a natural home for the variety. This has 5% Viognier included, natural yeast fermented to 13.3% alc., then aged 16 months in 20% new French oak equivalence. 50% underwent MLF. Bright, light golden straw yellow in colour. This has a beautifully fresh and tightly bound nose of peaches and white stonefruits along with minerally aromatics. Dry on palate, this is elegant and intense, with minerals and ripe citrus and stonefruit flavour, with the barest nuance of exotic lift. Very fine-textured, some MLF notes, oak very much in balance. It has good freshness that will help the wine keep 3-4+ years. 110 cases made. 18.5-/20 Oct 2010 RRP $34.95
