Fruit from the ‘Spade Oak vineyard, 95% Syrah with 5% Viognier added, the wine fermented to 12.6% alc., the wine aged 4 months in barrel. Even, purple-hued ruby-red colour with light purple hues on edge. This has an elegantly concentrated and intense nose of black berry fruits with subtle raspberry and black pepper, and earth nuances, unfolding to show herb notes with cool, steely minerals. Medium-bodied, this is a slender wine with good concentration and fine, restrained flavours of dark raspberries, pepper and spicy red florals. Fine-grained and firm tannins form tight, line, and are supported by good acidity, providing tension and freshness. The flavours are carried to a moderately long finish with a crisp, firm texture. This is an elegant Syrah with a fine, concentrated and firm linearity. Serve with Asian duck, pork, lamb and beef dishes over the next 4+ years. 16.5+/20 Feb 2013 RRP $24.95
