Spade Oak ‘Heart of Gold' Gisborne St Laurent 2011

Other Red from New Zealand – Gisborne
Review Date - 16-Mar-2015

17.5/20

Dark, deep hearted ruby-red colour with black hues, lighter on edge. The nose is elegant and lifted with aromatically bright, primary, dark red berry and black berried fruits. Exotic florals, spices and minerally elements add to the interest. The nose has finesse and fruit focus. Medium-bodied and elegantly presented, succulent black berried fruit flavours fill the front palate. This is very fresh and primary, revealing spicy black fruits along with some minerally reductive elements. The mouthfeel is lively with fresh acidity underling the palate and moderately extracted fine-grained tannins lend a supple structure. The flavours recede to a sweet, peppery finish. Fruit from the ‘Spade Oak' vineyard, low-cropped at 6 t/ha, indigenous yeast fermented to 12.0% alc. and 3.3 g/L rs, 50% of the wine aged in barrel for 6 months. 17.5/20 Mar 2015 RRP $24.95

Deep, purple-hued, dark ruby-red colour, youthful in expression. The nose is full of soft dark red berry and white pepper aromas laced with spices, lifted with florals and complexed by gamey nuances. Medium-bodied, softly full and up-front red berry and white pepper flavours form a layered amalgam with spice, savoury game and earthy elements. The mouthfeel is soft and even, with fine-grained extraction and elevated acidity providing energy and drive. The flavours lead to a dry, textural and brisk finish showing red fruits and spices. This is a juicy and racy St Laurent with savoury red fruits and Syrah-like white pepper flavours. Match with Mediterranean and Middle Eastern inspired fare over the next 4-5 years. Fruit from the ‘Spade Oak' vineyard, low-cropped at 6 t/ha, indigenous yeast fermented to 12.0% alc. and 3.3 g/L rs, 50% of the wine aged in barrel for 6 months. 17.5-/20 Feb 2013 RRP $24.95
