Obsidian Waiheke Island Cabernet/Merlot/Malbec 2013

Blended Red from New Zealand – Northland & Auckland
Review Date - 30-Nov-2015

17/20

Full, very dark, near impenetrable black-red colour. This has a firm and tightly bound nose of blackcurrant fruit, herbs and mint, with a hint of leaf, and an amalgam of herbs and minerals. The fruit is pristine, focussed and shows clarity. Medium-full bodied, tightly bound flavours of blackcurrant fruit, cassis, mint and herbs show with cooler spectrum leaf nuances. The palate is linear in flow with fine-grained tannin support and lively acid energy. Some pepper and leaf notes emerge, and the wine carries with a strong positive core to a long, firm, curranty finish. This is an elegant, singular, blackcurranty Cabernet Blend with a firm tannin line. Match with herb-marinated red meat dishes over the next 4-5+ years. A blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, 11% Malbec, 7% Petit Verdot and 6% Cabernet Franc from the ‘Obsidian’ vineyard, fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 13 months in 20% new French oak. 390 dozen made. 17.0/20 Dec 2015 RRP $29.50
