Obsidian ‘Reserve’ Waiheke Island Chardonnay 2014

Chardonnay from New Zealand – Northland & Auckland
Review Date - 30-Nov-2015

18.5-/20

Clone 95 and 15 fruit from the ‘Edbrooke’ vineyard, WBP and fully indigenous yeast barrel-fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine spending 10 months in 40% new French oak on lees with no batonnage nor MLF conversion. Bright, even straw-yellow colour with some depth, lighter on the rim. The nose is finely concentrated with aromas of ripe, savoury grapefruit and citrus fruits melded with mealy and nutty oak aromas, along with some complexing oxidative elements. The aromatics are focussed and grow in depth and richness with aeration. Medim-full bodied, the flavours of savoury citrus fruits show with richness and sweetness and are entwined with mealy and nutty oak complexities forming a dense, rounded core with plenty of palate presence. Subtle oxidative and toasty nuances add interest. The palate follows a fine, grainy textured line and is enlivened by refreshing acidity The structure carries the wine to a long, poised and bright finish with savoury stonefruit and nutty nuances. This is a rich, savoury citrus frited Chardonnay with nutty complexities and a soft texture and line. Match with poultry, pork, veal and rabbit over the next 4-5 years. 117 dozen made. 18.5-/20 Dec 2015 RRP $45.00
