Man O’ War ‘Dreadnought’ Waiheke Island Syrah 2012

Syrah from New Zealand – Northland & Auckland
Review Date - 18-Feb-2015

18.5+/20

Dark, deep, black-hued ruby-red colour with purple hues. The bouquet is soft and elegant in proportion, gently unfolding ethereal aromas of ripe blackberry fruit entwined with black pepper, Asian spices and aromatic oak. The nose has a stylish restraint and is detailed with interest. Fullish bodied, a fine and tight core of ripe black fruits is the feature on palate. Black pepper, spices, violet florals and black minerals emerge, and grow in depth and richness. The fruit is enlivened by fresh, underlying acidity and the palate ha some alcoholic power and drive. Powdery tannins provide a firm, but elegant structure with balance and grip, and the wine flows to a fine-textured, sweet-fruited, lingering finish. This is an elegant, fresh and finely structured Syrah with black fruits and spicy interest. Match with roasted beef and venison, and slow-cooked lamb dishes over the next 6-8 years. Syrah fruit indigenous yeast fermented to 14.5% alc., the wine aged 20 months in approx. 35% new puncheons with a further 3 months in tank prior bottling. 18.5+/20 Feb 2015 RRP $55.00
