Gladstone Vineyard Gladstone Pinot Noir 2011

Pinot Noir from New Zealand – Wairarapa & Wellington
Review Date - 18-Oct-2013

17.5/20

Moderately full, even ruby-red colour. The bouquet is finely presented with a core of soft red and black berry fruits that reveals detailed nuances of dark herbs, minerals, dark red florals and oak. Medium-bodied and elegantly proportioned, the flavours of dark red cherries and berryfruits are lifted with floral and oak elements. The fruit is a little shy, but has some sweetness and richness, enlivened by lacy acidity, and the mouthfeel is supple and smooth, with the tannin extraction forming a background line. The flavours flow with vitality to a very long and sustained, succulently fruited finish. Though a little shy, this is a fine and elegant Pinot Noir with sweet fruit, freshness and good length. Serve with poultry and pork dishes over the next 5+ years. Clones 5, 6, 13, 115, 667, 777 and Abel from Dakins Road and Gladstone with a small portion of Martinborough fruit, hand-picked, given a cold soak and fermented to 13.4% alc., the wine spending 2-3 weeks on skins and aged 10 months in 30% new French oak barrels. 17.5/20 Oct 2013 RRP $45.00

Light ruby-red colour with some purple hues, the nose is fresh and fragrant with lifted red cherry and berry fruit aromas with a slight herbal underlay along with a little savoury interest. This gives a nod to the cooler spectrum, but is attractively elegant. An elegantly sized wine on palate, featuring aromatic red berry fruit flavours along with subtle stalk and stem nuances. The palate is driven by the acidity which seems prominent, the extraction lighter and in the background. This is slender with a sinewy mouthfeel and has a moderately long finish which shows some toasty notes. This is very fresh and youthful in expression, but should put on considerably more weight with some bottle age. 17.5+/20  Mar 2013
