Gillman Matakana 2010

Blended Red from New Zealand – Northland & Auckland
Review Date - 01-Oct-2016

19-/20

Full, dark, deep black-hued ruby-red with slight garnet hues on the rim. This has a rich and firmly concentrated nose with complex layers of savoury dark-red berry fruits and dark plums, entwined with near-funky, earthy and game-like secondary development notes and lifted nutty, cedary and pencilly oak elements. Medium-full bodied, the palate has a rich, luscious and succulently concentrated core of ripe, savoury dark-red berry and plum fruit melded with comple secondary earth, game and dried herb notes, along with nutty, cedary and pencilly oak nuance. The palate is firm with a fine grainy line and considerable tannin extraction and grip, all enlivened by lacy acidity. This has plenty of power and drive, and the wine carries to a long, lingering finish of sweey and savoury, succulent fruit flavours. This is a concentrated, succulent Cabernet Franc blend with complex, savoury berry and plum fruit, with secondary earth and game notes, nutty oak and a firm palate line. Match with game meat and casseroles over the next 8-10 years. A blend of 65% Cabernet Franc, 31% Merlot and 4% Malbec, the fruit hand-picked, and fermented to 14.9% alc., the wine spending 22 days on skins and aged two years in 50% new Seguin Moreau oak barrels. 1,166 bottles made, a small number in half-bottles and large format bottlings. 19.0-/20 Oct 2016 RRP $70.00
