Brick Bay Matakana ‘Pharos’ 2010

Malbec from New Zealand – Northland & Auckland
Review Date - 20-Nov-2014

18/20

Full, deep, dark ruby-red colour, youthful in appearance. This has a full nose with soft, spicy red berry and plum fruit harmoniously interwoven with earth and spices, cedary oak and milk chocolate, and subtle, complexing secondary game notes. Medium-full bodied, plush, rich and juicy dark berry and plum fruit flavours form a well-packed core, unveiling layers of earth, Middle Eastern spices and oak. Supple tannins support the fruit, providing good structure and balance, and soft, ripe acidity lends vitality and drive. The wine is well-balanced between fruit sweetness and dry textures, and carries to an elegant, long lingering, dry finish with black berry and plum fruit notes. This is an elegant and harmonious blended red with plush dark fruits and spicy and savoury flavours. Serve with roast beef and lamb, and semi-hard cheeses over the next 6-8 years. 45.5% Malbec, 35.6% Petit Verdot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8.9% Merlot, fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 9 months 50% new and 40% second fill French oak. 18.0/20 Nov 2014 RRP $38.00
