Mudbrick Onetangi Valley Waiheke Island Syrah 2014
Syrah from New Zealand – Northland & Auckland
Review Date - 15-Jun-2015

17.5+/20
Full, very dark, black-hued ruby-red colour with youthful
purple hues. This has an elegantly
presented nose with deep aromas of black berried fruits and an amalgam of black
pepper and dark herbs. Some nutty oak
elements and subtle minerally reduction emerge in the glass. Medium-full bodied, the palate features a
tightly bound core with deep flavours of ripe black fruits complexed by
minerally reduction nuances, hints of dark herbs, nutty oak and lifted
pepper. The fruit has good sweetness and
is supported by fine-grained, firm tannin structure. The wine flows with energy and discreet acid
tension, the sinewy grip carrying the flavours to an elegant, lingering
finish. This is a tight, elegant,
black-fruited Syrah with complexing herb and mineral notes and fine, grainy
structure. Match with lamb, beef and
venison, and semi-hard cheeses over the next 6-7 years. 100% Syrah, hand-picked from the ‘Goldie’ and
‘Shepherds Point’ vineyards, fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 11 months
in 15% new French oak. 440 cases
made. 17.5+/20 Jun 2015
