Obsidian Waiheke Island Syrah 2010
Syrah from New Zealand – Northland & Auckland

18.5/20
Black-red colour, near impenetrable. The nose is full, solidly packed and deep with
ripe savoury plum fruit with some lift.
Violet florals and perfumes unfold, and this is fruit-focussed and very
contemporary, New World style. Elegant
on palate, the wine has a tight and concentrated core of ripe black berry and
dark red plum fruits, along with aromatic, lifted florals. Some savoury, game nuances emerge adding some
secondary interest. This is sweet and
quite lush, but has a fine, firm tannin line that carries the sweet fruit to a
very long finish. Clearly Syrah in
varietal expression, in the fully ripe style.
