Mudbrick ‘Reserve’ Waiheke Island’ Tempranillo 2014
Tempranillo from New Zealand – Northland & Auckland
Review Date - 18-Dec-2014

18.5/20
Very dark, deep, black-hued ruby-red colour with light purple
on rim. This has an intense and
well-concentrated nose of fresh, fragrant, primary raspberry, blackberry and
curranty fruit aromas, unfolding nuances of boysenberries, pepper and red
florals. Fullish-bodied, the palate is
elegantly proportioned with focussed and intense fruit flavours of ripe black
and red berry fruits with notes of plums, currants and herbs adding to the
array of flavours. This has a sweet fruited
core, supported by fine-grained tannin structure and refined textures and
grip. The acidity is balanced, lending
good energy and tension, carrying the wine to a long, fine-featured finish. This is a fresh, fruit-focussed Tempranillo
with fine, classical structure with the potential to develop with interest. Match with roasted red meats and hard cheeses
over the next 7-9 years. 100%
Tempranillo from the ‘Hawkes Crest’ vineyard, indigenous yeast fermented to
14.5% alc., the wine aged 6 months in 15% new French oak. 161 cases made. 18.5/20
