Odyssey ‘Reserve Iliad’ Gisborne Chardonnay 2012
Chardonnay from New Zealand – Gisborne
Review Date - 24-Dec-2013

18+/20
Hand-picked Mendoza clone fruit from the ‘Kawitiri’
vineyard, WBP and barrel-fermented, mainly by indigenous yeasts to 13.8% alc.,
the wine aged 12 months in 30% new French oak barriques on lees and 100%
MLF. This is a selection of the best
barrels. Brilliant, light golden-hued
straw-yellow colour, lighter on edge.
This has a full nose with good volume and depth of ripe citrus and
yellow stonefruit aromas with harmoniously presented barrel-ferment oak and
nutty layers, along with buttery MLF elements.
Full-bodied, the fruit flavours of citrus and tropical fruits combine
with toasty, nutty oak and creamy, buttery notes, and are well proportioned and
concentrated. The palate has good linear
drive with fine, grainy textures and underlying acidity. A creamy mouthfeel from the barrel work and
MLF allows the wine to flow smoothly to a citrussy and toasty finish. This is a full Chardonnay with ripe citrus
and toasty flavours along with body and weight.
Match with roast pork over the next 4-5 years. 18.0+/20 Dec 2013
