Te Motu ‘Kokoro’ Waiheke Island 2013
Blended Red from New Zealand – Northland & Auckland

18/20
Full, deep, black-red colour with light purple hues. This has a soft and gently restrained nose
that builds to show a solid and concentrated core of blackcurrants and black
plums entwined with dark herbs, revealing nuances of spice and pepper and
pencil-shavings oak. The aromatics are
fresh and youthful in expression.
Medium-full bodied, the fruit flavours are expressed with subtlety, and
are gently mouthfilling, showing dark plums, black and red currants, entwined
with dark herbal elements. The flavours
are harmonious, and the palate possesses presence and body, with supple,
fine-grained tannin structure carrying the wine to a soft, integrated, smooth
finish. This is a reserved, subtly rich,
but harmoniously flavoured Merlot-based blend with plum, currant and herb
flavours and a supple, finely structured palate. Match with lamb, beef and venison over the
next 7-8+ years. ‘Kokoro’ means ‘patriarch’
in Maori and is a tribute to family founder Terry Dunleavy. A blend of 50% Merlot, 35% Cabernet
Sauvignon, 10% Malbec and 5% Syrah, fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 12
months in 30% new French oak. 18.0/20 Aug 2016
